Back with another lotus (sort of!)

Postby JM5 » Sun 30 Jul, 2017 10:33 am

Morning all
I used to post of here when I had an Elise, then an Evora.
I now have a BMW i8 daily and a VX220 Turbo track car. As it's almost a lotus thought i'd come back and say hello!
Plan to enter time attack in it when it's finished {drive}

Welcome back Jordan, you didn't have to leave when you were lotusless - unless of course the temptation to get another one was too high for you to stick around :lol:

How does the VX compare to the other Lotus you've had?

It's tough to compare them as I’ve used them all differently but I’ll try:

The Elise was a S3 1.6. It was a weekend car which I took on a few trackdays. As a second car it was the best of the bunch comfortable enough to take on a long run, light and nimble. On the track days I did in it performed very well. Admittedly I wanted a bit more power at times but I really liked the small revy engine .

The Evora was an early NA which I used daily. I always thought it was a brilliant “GT” car very comfortable and usable. I did a lot of miles it in. Had quite a few problems with the Evora. Went through two clutches and various other niggles. It handled fantastically on the road and was great fun to take down a nice B road soaking up any lumps and bumps it came across. I did use it on the track a couple of times but I found it too soft and actually lapped slower in the Evora than I did in the Elise!

The VX is a 2.0 turbo with 270bhp and a lot of other mods. It’s 90% used on track and that is where it performs best. It’s too firm and low for the road now really although I’m sure a standard one would be very different. So far I’ve done 16 track days in it and not had any reliability issues.

In short… The Evora was the most usable, VX220 the best on track and the Elise was somewhere in-between!

Thanks for that, I do wonder if the cars fit into the niches that the journos (and the manufacturer's) put them in or if it's all just hype.
Nice to hear about real world experiences

Id imagine in that sentance the VX and Elise could be interchanged dependant upon the level of mods done.

hope the ECU is an easy and not costly fix!

Morning All

Just thought I'd update this thread as I have some more Lotus related news!
The VX is nearly finished and ready for testing. The plan is still to enter Time Attack in it this year.
I have my first test day booked for 12th March at Croft.

Now it's not road legal I'm looking to buy a V6 Exige for the road also {drive}

The VX220 has has been stripped down and rebuilt replacing, upgrading and lightening every component possible along the way.
The z20let has been rebuilt and now has VXR injectors, KO6 Hybrid turbo and pro alloy charge cooler. It hasn't been on the dyno since the rebuild yet but I expect it to be around 300bhp.
The suspension and brakes have been refurbished and i'm running stiffer superpro poly bushes, arb and toelink kit this year.

It still has the remapping to finish, aero kit and cage to fit then suspension to set up but here are a few pics of how the build has gone so far:
